The Avery Community Foundation is a growing family of philanthropic funds, source of grants for local causes and partner for donors. ACF was founded in 1997 and is led by a local volunteer advisory board that helps build community assets through the creation of permanent endowments, makes grants and leverages leadership – all for the benefit of Avery County.

The Avery Community Foundation will accept grant applications from April 10, 2026, to NOON eastern time on May 12, 2026. Applications received after this deadline will not be accepted, including late submissions due to technology issues. Funds are available for qualified charitable organizations serving the local community.
Grants typically range from $500 to $1,000. In 2025, ACF awarded $4,120 in grants through this competitive process. Learn more about past grant recipients.
Grants will be awarded from the community grantmaking fund.
How to apply
ACF is an affiliate of the North Carolina Community Foundation. Organizations must apply for grants using NCCF’s Grant Application Portal.
- Read the guidelines before you apply. Applications that do not adhere to guidelines will be ineligible for funding.
- If this is your first time applying, follow the instructions in Training Module I to create a profile. If your organization already has an account, use your information to log in.
- New and existing users should follow the instructions in Training Module II to add a grant application. Once logged in, you can access more information about the application process.

The Dewey Wells Citizenship Fund also awards grants to Avery County organizations that work to instill in the county’s young people the values of honesty, integrity, respect, resourcefulness, personal responsibility, and duty to God and country. Learn more and apply.

The Avery Community Foundation granted each of the following organizations $824 from its community grantmaking fund for a total of $4,120 in grants:
- Diaper Bank of NC for General Operating Support for Avery County Hygiene Distribution
- Freedom Trail Elementary for Amazing Shake 2025
- Oasis, Inc., for Operational Support for Opposing Abuse through Service, Information, and Shelter (OASIS)
- Pisgah Legal Services for Legal Services for Survivors of Domestic Violence and Child Abuse in Avery County
- Special Olympics North Carolina for Avery County Special Olympics
The board also granted $3,075 from the Dewey Wells Citizenship Fund:
- $1,025 to Scouting America Troop 807
- $1,025 to Scouting America Cub Scout Pack 807
- $1,025 to Scouting America Troop 4807
2026 Grants Awarded
In February 2026, NCCF awarded a total of $9 million in grants from the Disaster Relief Fund to 108 charitable organizations focused on long-term recovery from Hurricane Helene. Review the full list of grants, including those serving Avery County.
2025 Grants Awarded
In conjunction with the Avery Community Foundation, NCCF awarded $180,000 in grants from our Disaster Relief Fund to the following local organizations to support long-term recovery, resiliency and unmet needs related to Hurricane Helene.
- $30,000 to Avery County EMS
- $35,000 to Avery County Fire Commission
- $40,000 to Feeding Avery Families
- $35,000 to Toe River Health Department
- $40,000 to Volunteer Avery
If an organization is unable to receive a grant, the affiliate will choose another charitable or government organization to receive the award.
2024 grants awarded
The Avery Community Foundation awarded $8,700 in grants from its community grantmaking fund and other board advised funds to the following local nonprofits:
- $500 to Avery Association for Exceptional Citizens (doing business as Yellow Mountain Enterprises) for Classroom Without Walls
- $500 to High Country Caregiver Foundation for Kinship Navigation – counseling for Avery County
- $500 to High Country Community Health for Giving Closet
- $500 to Mountain Alliance for Avery Teen Leadership Development and After-school Support Program
- $500 to Oasis, Inc. for domestic violence services and emergency shelter
- $500 to Pisgah Legal Services for legal services for survivors of domestic violence and child abuse in Avery County
- $500 to Prevent Blindness North Carolina for Avery County vision screening program
- $550 to W.A.M.Y. Community Action for Avery County Community Garden
- $1,550 to Cub Scout Pack 807 Kiwanis Club of Banner Elk
- $1,550 to Scouts BSA Troop 4807 Kiwanis Club of Banner Elk

In response to disruptions Hurricane Helene may have caused to their work, NCCF offered flexibility to 2024 grantees of western affiliate foundations to repurpose funding awarded for specific programs or projects to best support their current needs. - $1,000 to Daughters of the Revolution – Crossnore for America 250 books
- $1,500 to Cub Scout Pack 807 Kiwanis Club of Banner Elk for membership and uniform assistance
- $2,170 to Mountain Alliance for Avery Teen Leadership Development and After-school Support Program
- $500 to Prevent Blindness North Carolina for Star Pupils Avery County
