Fund honoring Henderson native Frances Abbot Burton Powers awards $17,850 in grants; marks a decade of support for Henderson

The Frances Abbot Burton Powers Endowment, a fund of the North Carolina Community Foundation, has awarded $17,850 in grants to organizations supporting the local community.

The fund, established in memory of the late Frances Abbot Burton Powers by her husband Preston Powers, makes annual grants to government entities and nonprofit organizations that benefit the City of Henderson in Vance County. Since the first grants were awarded in 2014, the fund has given nearly $190,000.

Frances Abbot Burton Powers was a native of Henderson, NC, the daughter of the late Kalford L. Burton and Ruth Abbot Burton. Powers attended Henderson High School, graduated from Hollins Preparatory School, attended Converse College and graduated from Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. She was a member of the first Girl Scout troop in Henderson and a lifelong member of First Baptist Church. After Powers passed away in 2012, her husband Preston Powers established this fund in her memory. On Aug. 26 of this year, Preston Powers celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends at home in Henderson. Learn more about this fund.
