New scholarship to support Yadkin County high school graduates

A new scholarship fund honoring a late educator has been established at the North Carolina Community Foundation to benefit graduates of Yadkin County high schools.

The Shirley Moore Bolick Scholarship for Yadkin County will be open to graduating seniors of a Yadkin County high school who have been accepted to and plan to further their education at a two- or four-year college, community college or technical school.

The scholarship will be awarded to students who demonstrate academic achievement and good citizenship as demonstrated by being a person of integrity who is responsible, honest, respectful, kind, fair, compassionate, and involved in the community.

The first scholarship will be awarded in spring 2023. It is expected to award about $23,000 annually to one or more students.

Shirley Ray Moore Bolick died in 2021 at the age of 87. She was a graduate of Courtney School in Yadkin County and Wake Forest University.

Bolick taught for 30 years in Roanoke Rapids, Mount Airy and West Yadkin schools before retiring.  Bolick’s husband Bill died in 2010, and Bolick left a generous gift through her estate to establish the scholarship fund.

Shirley Moore Bolick

Both of Bolick’s parents were both educators and Bolick had a rich family history of education in the Yadkin Valley region as well as other parts of the state dating back into the 1920s. She was committed to inspiring students to pursue their dreams through education, responsible citizenship and community service, which will be further realized through the scholarship fund.

The North Carolina Community Foundation (NCCF) is the only statewide community foundation serving North Carolina and has administered over $243 million in grants since 1988. With more than $440 million in assets, NCCF sustains more than 1,200 endowments and partners with a network of affiliates to award grants and scholarships in communities across the state.

An important component of NCCF’s mission is to ensure rural philanthropy has a voice at the local, regional and national levels.
