Carlos Andrade Chavez

A 2024 graduate of Bunker Hill High School, Chavez is attending Catawba Valley Community College.

A recipient of the Tom and Freida Johnson Scholarship Endowment, he is studying health science and intends to eventually attend Western Carolina and pursue nursing.

Chavez credits his parents, both of whom immigrated from Mexico, for motivating him to become a first-generation college student.

“I entered high school thinking about what I was going to do with my life. I realized what [my parents] were trying to tell me all along: work hard so you can get a good education. Get a good job so you can work to live life, not work to survive,” Chavez said.

Chavez played on the high school varsity tennis team all four years and hopes to continue playing in college. He was also active in JROTC as squadron commander and participated in Beta Club for three years.

“I am very thankful for this help you have given me. I am going to make sure your help did not go to waste. I will achieve my goal, and if you ever need some medical assistance, hopefully I’ll give you the best care that I learned in school, thanks to you.”
